What is 316 Stainless Steel Plate

316 stainless steel plate is an austenitic stainless steel sheet containing 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2%-3% molybdenum, complying with international standards such as ASTM A240 and EN 1.4401. Its core advantage stems from the addition of molybdenum—compared to 304 stainless steel, it offers significantly enhanced resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and chloride ion corrosion, along with excellent high-temperature resistance (withstanding temperatures below 870℃) and mechanical processability. Available with surface finishes including 2B, BA, and No.1, it is widely used in marine engineering, chemical equipment, food processing, medical devices, high-end building materials, and other fields requiring strict corrosion resistance. It is a high-end corrosion-resistant plate option for both industrial and civil applications.

316 Stainless Steel Plate Price

The mainstream market price of 316/316L stainless steel plates is 1,900-2,800 US dollars per ton (approximately 1.9-2.8 US dollars per kg). Specific quotes vary depending on specifications, surface finishes, places of origin, and purchase volumes.

For cold-rolled 2B finish (2.0-6.0mm thick), the price range is 2,200-2,800 US dollars per ton.

For hot-rolled No.1 finish (3.0-12.0mm thick), the price is 1,900-2,300 US dollars per ton. Special surface finishes such as 8K mirror finish come with a premium of about 15-30%.

Prices are dominated by raw material costs such as nickel and molybdenum, and are also affected by the place of origin. A 5-10% discount is available for bulk purchases, while spot purchases incur a 10-15% premium.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

The core advantage stems from the addition of 2%-3% molybdenum. Compared with 304 stainless steel, it offers significantly enhanced resistance to chloride ions, pitting corrosion, and crevice corrosion, capable of withstanding harsh environments such as seawater and acid-alkali chemical media.

Excellent Mechanical Properties

With a tensile strength of ≥515MPa and a yield strength of ≥205MPa, it possesses good ductility and toughness, enabling easy implementation of complex processing technologies such as stamping, bending, and welding. It maintains structural stability after forming, adapting to the diverse processing needs of industrial equipment manufacturing.

Reliable High-Temperature Resistance

It can be continuously used at temperatures up to 870℃ and retains stable mechanical properties without deformation or failure in short-term high-temperature environments. Suitable for high-temperature working scenarios such as high-temperature boilers, flues, and chemical reaction kettles.

Strong Sanitary Adaptability

Featuring a smooth, non-porous surface, it is easy to clean and free of heavy metal leaching. Compliant with FDA food contact safety standards and hygiene requirements for medical equipment, it also supports various surface finishes including 2B, BA, and 8K, adapting to multiple application scenarios such as food processing, medical devices, and high-end building materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, SS 304 or 316?
There is no absolute superiority between SS 304 and 316 stainless steel—their suitability depends on specific application scenarios. Both are austenitic stainless steels with similar mechanical properties, but 316, containing 2%-3% molybdenum, offers significantly superior resistance to pitting corrosion and chloride ion corrosion. It is ideal for harsh environments such as marine engineering, chemical equipment, and medical devices.
SS 304 boasts higher cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for mild corrosion scenarios like dry environments, food processing equipment, and decorative building materials. In terms of cost, 316 is 20%-30% more expensive than 304, so material selection should be based on actual usage requirements.
316 stainless steel corresponds to the A4 grade, a classification derived from the ISO 3506-1 standard for stainless steel fastener materials. It and the A2 grade (corresponding to 304 stainless steel) are the two mainstream austenitic stainless steel grades.
The core difference lies in the molybdenum content: the A4 grade requires 2%-3% molybdenum, which is consistent with the composition of 316 stainless steel. Its resistance to pitting corrosion and chloride ion corrosion is significantly superior to the A2 grade that contains no molybdenum. It should be noted that A2/A4 are dedicated grades for fasteners, while 316 stainless steel plates are usually marked with standards such as ASTM A240 or EN 1.4401. However, from the perspective of composition matching, the corresponding fastener grade for 316 stainless steel is A4.
