What is Diamond Steel Plate

Diamond Steel Plate is a high-performance wear-resistant steel material. Its core technology involves applying a composite wear-resistant coating onto the surface of a high-quality steel base plate through advanced processes like thermal spraying or hardfacing. This coating is primarily composed of tungsten carbide (WC) particles, bound together by a metallic binder phase (such as cobalt or nickel).

The coating possesses extreme hardness (typically above HRC 60), akin to ‘diamond’. The tungsten carbide particles provide exceptional resistance to abrasive wear, while the metallic binder ensures strong bonding to the substrate and good impact resistance. It is not made entirely of diamond; the name metaphorically signifies its superior wear-resistant properties. It is specifically designed for harsh operating conditions involving high-intensity abrasion, scraping, and moderate impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 4x8 sheet of diamond plate steel weight?
A 4×8 sheet of diamond plate steel (32 sq ft) weighs approximately:
  • 1/8″ (3.2mm) thick: 202 lbs (91.7kg)
  • 3/16″ (4.8mm) thick: 282 lbs (127.9kg)
  • 1/4″ (6.4mm) thick: 368 lbs (166.9kg)
  • 3/8″ (9.5mm) thick: 524 lbs (237.7kg)
  • 1/2″ (12.7mm) thick: 687 lbs (311.6kg)
Weight calculation formula:Weight = Area × Weight per sq ft(Standard carbon steel diamond plate weighs 6.3-21.5 lbs per sq ft depending on thickness)
Note: Diamond pattern adds ~1.02 lbs per sq ft compared to flat steel. Stainless steel is ~1.5-2 lbs per sq ft heavier, while aluminum diamond plate is ~2/3 lighter than carbon steel.
Diamond plate steel is not inherently stronger than plain steel of the same base material and thickness.
Essentially, diamond plate steel is plain steel (carbon steel, stainless steel, etc.) processed with a raised diamond pattern on the surface. Its mechanical strength—including yield strength, tensile strength, and load-bearing capacity—depends entirely on the grade of the base steel (e.g., A36, Q235, 304 stainless steel) and its thickness, which is consistent with plain steel of the same specifications.
The diamond pattern is designed to enhance slip resistance and surface wear resistance, not to improve structural strength. In some cases, the uneven surface may slightly reduce the effective flat bearing area, but this impact is negligible for most industrial applications.
Per ASTM A786 standards, the strength of diamond plate steel is strictly tied to its base material properties, not the surface pattern.
