What is Stainless Steel Plate
Stainless steel plates are flat steel products manufactured from stainless steel (with chromium ≥10.5% as the primary alloying element, often supplemented by nickel, molybdenum, etc.) through hot-rolling or cold-rolling processes. Their core characteristics lie in excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, good strength, and toughness.
In the industry, they are typically classified by microstructure into austenitic (e.g., 304, 316, the most widely used), ferritic, martensitic, and duplex stainless steels, among others. Surface finishes vary widely, including 2B (cold-rolled bright), BA (bright annealed), NO.1 (hot-rolled), along with brushed, mirror, and others. They are extensively used in construction curtain walls, chemical equipment, food machinery, medical devices, transportation, and other fields, making them essential industrial and decorative materials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 304 or 316 stainless steel better?
From a professional perspective, there is no absolute superiority between 304 and 316 stainless steel. The core distinction lies in the fact that 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum (Mo), which gives it far superior resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion compared to 304.
Material Selection Guide:
Use 304 for: The vast majority of general environments (e.g., household décor, food processing equipment, architectural cladding), where it offers the best cost-effectiveness.
Use 316 for: Corrosive environments containing chlorides, such as coastal architecture (sea salt spray), chemical processing, seawater handling, and high-salt food processing. This represents a necessary cost for critical corrosion resistance.
Can 316 stainless steel rust?
316 stainless steel is not absolutely rust-proof; it simply offers far superior corrosion resistance compared to 304 stainless steel. Its molybdenum content enables effective resistance to chloride corrosion, making it suitable for marine, chemical, and similar environments. However, prolonged exposure to high-concentration salt spray, strong acids or alkalis, or damage/contamination to its passive film can still lead to pitting or crevice corrosion. Regular cleaning and maintenance can extend its rust-free service life.
