What is A516 Steel Plate

A516 steel plate is a carbon steel plate for moderate and lower temperature pressure vessels under the ASTM standard. It is primarily used in boilers, pressure vessels, and other welded structures. This grade offers good room-temperature impact toughness, weldability, and formability, making it particularly suitable for service conditions ranging from -30°C to 450°C. The common grade A516 Gr. 70 (with tensile strength ≥485 MPa) is typically supplied in the normalized condition to ensure microstructural uniformity. Its chemical composition requires strict control of sulfur and phosphorus content (≤0.035%), and it is manufactured in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. It is widely used in the fabrication of pressure vessels for industries such as petroleum, chemical, and power generation.
