A514 Steel Plate

Our A514 steel plate products cover multi-grade quenched and tempered alloy steel plates. After quenching and tempering treatment, the yield strength reaches up to 100ksi, combining excellent toughness and weldability, with stable performance in low temperature environments. It is widely suitable for heavy-duty applications such as construction machinery, bridge construction, cranes, and heavy equipment, effectively reducing weight and meeting high-strength requirements. We provide customized size and processing services, with quality in line with ASTM A6 standards. Welcome to inquire!

What is A514 Steel Plate

A514 steel plate is a quench and tempered high-strength alloy structural steel under the ASTM standard system. Processed through double procedures of quenching and tempering, it has a minimum yield strength of 100ksi, coupled with excellent low-temperature toughness and weldability, which avoids the common brittle defects of high-strength steel.
Strictly complying with the supporting technical specifications of ASTM A6, this steel plate is widely used in heavy-load scenarios such as construction machinery, heavy-duty cranes, long-span bridges, and mining equipment. It can realize the lightweight design of equipment, reduce the structural dead weight while ensuring bearing safety, and is a core structural material for high-end equipment manufacturing.

A514 Steel Plate Price

The price of A514 steel plate is affected by factors such as grade, thickness, purchase quantity, and processing requirements. For basic grades (B/F/H) with regular thicknesses of 1/4 – 4 inches, the price is approximately 800-950 USD/ton for small batches (1-9 tons) and 650-750 USD/ton for large batches (≥25 tons).
Due to differences in alloy content and heat treatment processes, special grades (Q/P/E) and thick plates (>4 inches) have a price increase of 10-20%, with a large-batch price of about 750-900 USD/ton.
The price includes quenching and tempering treatment in accordance with ASTM A514/A514M standards, but excludes deep processing fees such as cutting and drilling (deep processing usually incurs an additional 50-150 USD/ton).

A514 Steel Plate Properties

A514 steel plate
A514 steel plate
Ultra-high load-bearing performance

Subjected to quenching and tempering treatment, it has a minimum yield strength of 100ksi (690MPa) and a tensile strength of 110-130ksi (758-896MPa). In heavy-load applications, the plate thickness can be reduced to achieve structural lightweighting while maintaining strength.

Excellent low-temperature toughness

Compliant with ASTM A514/A514M standards, it delivers an impact energy of ≥20J at -20℃, avoiding the risk of low-temperature brittle fracture common in high-strength steels and suitable for applications in cold regions.

Good welding compatibility

Optimized with a low-carbon and multi-alloy formula, it supports conventional processes such as arc welding and gas shielded welding without complex preheating. The strength of welded joints matches well with the base metal.

Stable process reliability

With precisely controlled heat treatment parameters, the plate features a thickness tolerance of ±0.05 inches, uniform internal structure free of defects, and superior fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance compared to ordinary high-strength steel plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is A514 the same as T1 steel?
A514 and T1 steel (often referred to as T‑1) are essentially regarded as the same category of quenched and tempered high-strength steel plates, but there are slight differences in their nomenclature and reference scope.
  • A514 is an ASTM standard designation, covering multiple sub-grades (such as B/F/H/Q, etc.), which uniformly requires a minimum yield strength of ≥100ksi (≈690MPa) and is suitable for welded structures.
  • T1 is a trade name of ArcelorMittal, corresponding to the A514 system. Among them, T‑1 is most similar in composition to A514 Grade F, while T‑1 Type A/B are approximately equivalent to A514 Grade B and H respectively.
  • Both share the same core properties: quenched and tempered state, excellent low-temperature toughness and good weldability. It is only necessary to match them according to standards/grades during procurement to avoid mixing different sub-grades.
A514 steel is not the same as A36 steel; they are two types of steel with extremely distinct properties and applications.
A36 is an ASTM standard carbon structural steel with a yield strength of only 36ksi (250MPa). It features low cost and easy processability, making it suitable for non-heavy-load structures such as general construction and ordinary machinery components.
A514 is a quenched and tempered high-strength steel with a minimum yield strength of 100ksi (690MPa). It boasts excellent low-temperature toughness and good weldability, and is ideal for heavy-load or low-temperature applications like construction machinery and pressure vessels.
The two steels differ completely in strength, heat treatment state, alloy composition and application scenarios. They must never be arbitrarily substituted in engineering projects, and selection must strictly comply with design specifications.
Equivalent grades to ASTM A514 steel need to be distinguished by standard systems, with the core requirements being quenched and tempered high strength of ≥690MPa (100ksi), good weldability and excellent low-temperature toughness.
  • North America: ArcelorMittal T-1 series (T-1, T-1A/B) are highly corresponding to various grades of A514; ASTM A517 (for pressure vessels) has similar performance.
  • Europe: EN 10149-2 S700MC, DIN QStE690TM, NFA E690D and BS 75F70.
  • China: Q690E (quenched and tempered state) can be used as a substitute, but details such as impact toughness and thickness tolerance must be verified according to design and welding requirements, and direct mixing is not allowed.
