What is AR400 Steel Plate
AR400 steel plate is a medium-carbon low-alloy wear-resistant steel plate, in which “AR” stands for Abrasion Resistant, and “400” refers to a Brinell hardness of approximately 400 HBW (360–444 HBW). Produced through quenching and tempering heat treatment, it contains alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, chromium and silicon, featuring high wear resistance, favorable toughness and weldability. It is widely used in medium and heavy wear conditions including mining, construction machinery, hoppers and chutes, serving as a mainstream wear-resistant steel grade with balanced wear resistance and formability.
AR400 Steel Plate Price
- Regular thickness (6–20mm): $580–680/ton
- Thin plate (3–5mm): $620–720/ton
- Heavy plate (25–50mm): $650–750/ton
Prices are significantly affected by thickness, specifications, origin, order quantity and exchange rate. The ex-factory prices of mainstream domestic steel mills mostly range from $580–650/ton, while imported brands (such as SSAB, JFE) carry a premium of about 15–25%. Affected by fluctuations in raw material and shipping costs, prices have recently shown a slight upward trend with minor fluctuations.

AR400 Steel Plate Properties

With a Brinell hardness of approximately 400 HBW (360–444 HBW) and quenched-and-tempered treatment, it offers outstanding surface wear resistance, greatly reducing wear caused by material scouring and friction, and extending service life of equipment.
It maintains decent impact toughness despite high hardness, is less prone to brittle fracture, adapts to complex heavy-duty conditions such as mining and construction machinery, and delivers stable impact and fatigue resistance.
As a medium-carbon low-alloy wear-resistant steel, it features weldability and formability, allowing conventional processing including cutting, bending and welding to suit various structural parts.
It has uniform composition and structure, high dimensional accuracy, and wide application. It is a general-purpose wear-resistant steel plate with balanced wear resistance and processability, providing outstanding cost performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between AR400 and AR500 plate?
Both AR400 and AR500 are quenched and tempered wear-resistant steel plates, with core differences in hardness and application scenarios. AR400 has a Brinell hardness of approximately 400 HBW, featuring better toughness, weldability and bending performance, making it suitable for medium wear conditions with certain impact. AR500 has a hardness of around 500 HBW, providing stronger wear resistance but higher brittleness and greater difficulty in welding and forming, so it is mostly used in severe wear and low-impact environments. In short, AR400 emphasizes a balance between wear resistance and toughness with strong versatility, while AR500 focuses on extreme wear resistance and requires higher processing and application standards.
What is the difference between 4140 and AR400 steel plate?
4140 contains chromium and molybdenum, focusing on high strength, high toughness and fatigue resistance as a quenched and tempered structural steel. AR400 is a medium-carbon low-alloy steel processed by quenching and tempering, with 400 HBW hardness as its core index, designed specifically for wear resistance.
Quenched and tempered 4140 has a tensile strength of approximately 1080 MPa and hardness of HRC45–50, with good weldability and machinability. AR400 has a hardness of 360–440 HBW and excellent wear resistance, but inferior toughness and processability compared to 4140.
4140 is used for heavy-duty structural parts such as crankshafts, gears and high-pressure connecting rods. AR400 is applied in wear-resistant working conditions including buckets, liners and silos.
